THE SHREWSBURY TITLE (By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, 19th December. The young Earl of Shrewsbury’s engagement, besides the usual society llutter, has caused a discussion on peerage vintages. The oldest of all our earldoms is that of Arundel, but as that is subordinate to the holder’s Dukedom of Norfolk, the Shrewsbury title ranks as premier, though it dates only to the 15th us against the Arundel earldom’s 12th century. 'The Shrewsbury belted Earls have included many great warriors, ono of whom had a record of over forty combats, and felt none too old for a final one us an octogenarian knight. Shakespenru’s historical plays bristle with the name of Shrewsbury, though it was the town clock, and not the Earl’s private chronometer, by which Sir John Fill staff alleged lie had engaged young Harry Hotspur in single (ig.it “for a full hour.” l’hese ancient titles carry us far hack into English history. They arc rooted in our soil like old oaks.
