NELSON UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING

A meeting of the Nelson Rugby Union Management Committee was held last evening when there were present Messrs R. J. Eyre (President, in the chair), R. Brownlie, J. F. Potter (vicepresidents), T. Austin (Rival), W. Shain (Nelson). 11. Silcock (Schools), I. Wybcr (Referees), 11. Williams (Regimental), R. Brownlie. (Pirate), H. McPherson (Rover). F. J. Lock (Treasurer), D. Fowler (Waimea), W. Alexander (Old Boys), R. H. Methven (College), and D. D. Merritt (Secretary). The New Zealand Union advised that the annual meeting of delegates would be held in Wellington on the 9th May. A letter was received from the Nelson Amateur Athletic Club asking if the Union had any objection to the Club holding an athletic meeting on Trafalgar Park on Easter Saturday. Application had yet to be made to the City Council. It was pointed out that the committee could not commit the incoming committee regarding the commencement of the new season’s play, but members were in favour of assisting the club and a motion was carried recommending the new- committee not to commence competition play until after Easter. It was decided that the annual meeting of the union be held on the 25th March. RETIREMENT OF SECRETARY Mr Merritt, secretary, announced that he would not be seeking re-election on account of the work taking up too much of his time. The president said it came as a surprise to him to learn of the secretary’s intention to retire. Mr Merritt had carried out his duties in a most efficient manner during the past year, and the Union would' be the losers in his decision. Mr Shain expressed regret that the secretary would not seek re-election, and he ’moved that the Union place on record its appreciation of Mr Merritt’s services as secretary and previously as treasurer. Mr Freeman in seconding the motion paid a tribute to the work of the secretary. Air Potter endorsed the _ remarks of the other speakers; the Union was losing a valuable servant whose place would be hard to fill. On Mr Merritt declining to reconsider his decision the motion was carried. Tile report and balance sheet. to be presented to the annual meeting of delegates were approved by the committee
