RESTRICTION OF MEAT IMPORTS
BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSALS CONSIDERED BY CABINET Proposals for the continuation of the present short-term agreement for the restriction of meat imports into Great Britain have been by the Government from the British Government. . The existing agreement will expire on 31st March, and the cablegram which has been received by the New Zealand Government suggests similar terms for a three months period up to 30tli June. Cabinet considered last week the British Government’s proposals. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, said it woidd be necessary for New Zealand to have different allocations from those operating in the current quarter, but the negotiations were not yet completed. The British Government, said Mr Forbes, had not yet revealed its conditions for a long-term agreement. The suggestion of sending a Ministei to London to negotiate such an arrangement had not been raised by the British Government and had not so far been considered by the New Zealand Government. It was suggested to Mr Forbes that it might be convenient for the New Zealand representative at the King’s silver jubilee celebrations in May to take part in the negotiations for a long-term agreement, but be said the position was not, sufficiently advanced to consider that proposal.
