LOTTERIES FOR DOLE
NEW YORK MAYOR’S SCHEME NEW YORK, 27th August. Tlie Mayor of New York, Mr Forollo la Guardia, proposes to raise 12,000,000 dollars a year by running municipal lotteries. More than 1,000,000 people in New York are on the dole, and the civic expenses for July reached the record amount of 16,000,000 dollars. A national conference on the question of legalising lotteries has been called by prominent New York citizens, who point to the Postmaster-General’s estimate that 2,000,000,000 dollars is sent from the United States every year for tickets in the Irish sweepstakes.
