WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MONTHLY MEETING AT WAKEFIELD The August meeting of the Wakefield Women’s institute proved a most interesting one and was attended by 42 members and a number of visitors. Mrs Gloss, president, occupied the chair, and the motto for the month was, “When von confer a kindness be silent about' it —when von receive one be sure to speak about it.” Roll call was answered with 'A cheerful occupation for a dull day.” A very interesting and comprehensive report of the annual conference field in Wellington in July was given by the delegate, Mrs Closs. , . ... There followed a most instructive talk on the culture of chrysanthemums, by Mr Hockey of Nelson. This was greatly appreciated by all present, and improved blooms are hoped for in tile coming season.

Afternoon tea served by the hostesses was partaken of, after which members were fortunate in listening to another address, given by Dr Irwin, the school medical officer, who spoke on the general health of children, and illustrated by a chart tin- last few years’ 'records. The tw’o competitions were won as follows: Artificial flowers, Mrs A. McPherson 1 and 2; home-made cleanser, Mrs J. Eves 1, Mrs Chaytor 2, and Mrs Andrews .‘l.

A sub-committee was formed in connection with the. fancy dress dance which it is proposed to hold'on 27th September file smgn.g of the National Anthem then brought a pleasant afternoon to‘a close.
