NELSON PLAY CANTERBURY GOOD SHOWING FOR YOUNG TEAM I" . ‘ (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Ist September. The Canterbury representatives beat Nelson to-day b,y 31 points to 12 Of these big scores, 21 points, 12 for Canterbury and 9 for Nelson, came from penalty goals The match Wis at times by no means one-sided, indeed when the teams changed over at half time, there was a difference of only two points in the scores. Canterbury 11, Nelson 9. The young Nelson team, which is touring .more for experience than with the hopes of winning matches against first class provinces, made a gallant resistance and was occasionally dangerous. However, in trie long game, the players lacked knowledge and skill to iinish off scoring against sound defence C anicbury s score, large- as it was, would have been bigger in the second half, 'but for some, bad handling by the backs. The game was played in excellent conditions with a cool breeze and firm turf. Tries for Canterbury were scored l:y Hart, Macaully. Stewart, McThail and Mann. Nolan converted two tries and kicked three penalty goals and Deavoll one. For Nelson Hippolite scored the only try and Stewart and McLean (2), kicked penalty goals. MANAGER FOR 1936 ALL BLACKS WELLINGTON, Ist September. Mr V. R. Merditn, of Auckland, has consented to nomination as manager of the 1935 All Elacks for England. RANFURLY SHIELD HAWSES BAY WITHSTAND CHALLENGE NAPIER, This Day. Hawkes Bay showed marked improvement in every department to survive the challenge for the Ranfurly Shield by Taranaki by 23 points to 8 The result was never in doubt. Hawkes Bay were on the ball,, every minute and it was not till the closing stages that Taranaki looked at all likely to score. The Hawkes Bay backs particularly showed marked improvement, though there is still a weakness that prevents their penetrating as well as they might. The Hawkes Bay forwards outclassed Taranaki in the first half, but play in that division was much closer in the second half when Taranaki evidently played to instructions to keep play close. The improvement in hooking was perhaps the best feature of Hawkes Bay play. They outhooked Taranaki time after time and had the five-eighths been more penetrative the score would have been much greater. The Taranaki backs lacked penetration, and only rarely, combined in any dangerous moves. SOUTHLAND WIN IN DISMAL CONDITIONS INVERCARGILL, This Day. Rugby Park was sodden for the representative Rugby fixture Southland v." South Canterbury. Rain, snow and ’sleet fell intermittently and a cold wind blew throughout the game, which was won by Southland by 3 points to nil. The Southland forwards were outplayed in all departments except in hall possession, which in the circumstances was not a great advantage. NARROW WIN WELLINGTON DEFEAT AUCKLAND WELLINGTON, This Day. After appearing to be a beaten team the Wellington Rugby representatives rallied in the second spell of the match against Auckland and defeated the visitors by 10 points to 13. The game was bright in patches with each team having its periods of dennite domininance, but the play was not .consistently good. Conditions were favourable, with bright sun, and a light northerly wind and dry, turf. Auckland led by 8 points to 3 at half time. They played with the wind for tli e first spell and were definitely the better team up till the interval, their combined work being much sounder than that of the Welington players. The Wellington forwards battled gamely against a pack which shaded them in most departments. Until half time the Wellington hacks were being the chief bugbear. There was no thrust in their attack. Auckland lost certain tries by faulty handling of the ball after they had run the Wellington backs out of position. maorTteam TO TOUR AUSTRALIA NEXT YEAR AUCKLAND, This Day.
