CONTROL OF TAXIS
(To the Editor) Sir, —I have read with interest that Nelson may have a “Control of Taxis”. Gentlemen of the Council are treading on very dangerous ground. We will assume for the moment that 24 taxis is the maximum allowed to apply for hire in Nelson. Sav these 24 cars formed themselves into a working arrangement or a pool what is the result? A combine or trust. I say why pick on taxis. There _ are many things that need control if it a matter of economics. We understand that another theatre will be built shortly. There is not enough for the existing theatres. Is the Council prepared to refuse this theatre company a licence as we are more than adequately supplied? Tho committee report in one instance is certainly very poor. I refer to the paragraph that says a £6OO car cannot compete with a £4OO car. I say that the better cars are very seldom on the rank. Why? Because they are earning money. Take the succes:ful men in this business and see their beautiful cars. Turnover is what counts, not outlay or running costs. City fathers please would be well advised to let this matter drop or they may find other concerns asking for the same protection but if they must do it to please the interests concerned they should be prepared to do it all round. —I am etc., SURVIVAL OF FITTEST. Nelson, Ist September.
