CLIMAX TO DISPUTE
RICKSHAW OWNERS AND COUNCIL RIOTING AT SHANGHAI (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received lltli August, 9.15 a.m.) SHANGHAI, 10th August. At the International Settlement 10,000 public hire rickshaws almost entirely disappeared from the streets to-day'to the accompaniment of riots and acts of sabotage, making a climax to the prolonged dispute of the municipal council with the rickshaw owners whereby the latter were ordered to improve the conditions of the pullers of the vehicles. Gangsters engaged by the owners and middlemen .who stand to lose most are desperately endeavouring to maintain the services under former conditions. It is estimated that between 50,000 and 70,000 pullers and their dependents are involved. Hundreds have been arrested and volunteer pullers are nursing riot wounds.
