TAHUNANUI

TOWN BOARD MEETING

AFFAIRS OF THE DISTRICT

At the fortnightly meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board last evening there were present: Messrs C. IT. Chamberlain (chairman). T. W. Roberts. IV. Cl. Tiller, and M. O’Sullivan. Messrs G. Cunningham. M. Grace, and L. Ingham were excused from attendance. Accounts- amounting to £25 17s 2d were passed for payment. The chairman reported on the meeting with tlio Main Highways Board, when matters regarding the stabilising oi the cliffs, Magazine Point, the camber of the highway, and the chains were dealt with. In regard to the cliffs the board had gained its point, and tlio other two matters were under consideration. Mr 'Chamberlain said that Mr Lynch had viewed the troublesome part of the cliffs and considered that tlio stun of £IOO would be sufficient for the job. The chairman considered that they would have to sell the spoil and so clear it away quickly. Mr O’Sullivan said he did not think that the board should sell the spoil. It had been a short-sighted policy of the old board selling the spoil from the cliffs, which the board needed for footpaths, and it should be stored till wanted. The chairman remarked that cartage on the spoil would be heavy. However it was a matter that could ho gone into. Mr O’Sullivan considered that tho board had been too modest in asking for only £IOO for the work at the cliffs. A further letter is to ho sent to the Waimea County Council in reference to an agreement on the matter of adjustments made necessary by tho recent alteration of boundaries. Correspondence was received from. the Nelson Local Unemployment Committee in reference to a conference of local bodies to consider steps to be taken for the relief of distress in the winter; and asking for representatives of the board to be present. It was resolved that the chairman, and Mr Cunningham and Mr Tiller represent the board at the meeting which is to he held on 14th May. The report of the foreman stated that during the last fortnight twelve yards of metal have been placed on the roads, mainly Murntni street, and intersections. During {lie next fortnight that piece of Parker’s road between the Main road and Muratai street will ho re-metalled. So far 16yds of fine screenings have been used for this work. Tlio water-table in Beach road has been regraded and all superfluous water carried out through the drain pipe on to the mud flat. No men have been employed apart from relief workers. On relief works nine men were emnloyed at the depot last week, 1 and 12 this week, getting out metal. So far 95 yards of stone has been screened, 1 and 70 yards of fine screenings. Tho chairman reported on behalf of the works committee on tlio proposed sealing of two aento corners on the bill--1 side. Mr Chamberlain considered that r it would be a great saving to the district ' to got the corners done. In reference to J the hoard’s tar sealing policy, ho pointed 1 out that- the board adopted sealing simp- ! Iv as a matter of easing maintenance 1 costs. k The question is still to be finalised. ' Mr Tiller submitted the works com- ‘ mittec’s report. Tt was resolved that the permanent •' man he paid for urgent work done out--1 side of his ordinal-'- hours.
