TRANSPORT PROBLEMS

(To the Editor) Sir, —In Tuesday night’s “Mail” is a letter signed by E. T. James, in which lie says: “A Air Smith wished to know if the licensing authority would fix the price of apple cartage from Tasman to Inangahua Junction at Is per case and tomatoes at lid per case, and then airily said the carriers were practically agreed upon these prices.” Now for Air James’ peace of mind I wish to point out that when asking the authority to (ix the price at Is for apples it was at the request, and on behalf of, the whole of the licensed carriers (with one exception), trading betwen Motucka-Jnangahua, and Nel-son-Inangahna, and not for myself only. lie also says that some transport linns can work at lower costs than others because of better management. Quite so, the same applies to orehardists and others.

However, I can assure Air James that the whole of the licensed carriers will welcome the presence of himself and all other orehardists of the district at the next meeting of the licensing authority when the matter of price fixation is to be thrashed out.- —I am, etc., HER B SMITH. .Nelson, 10th April.
