CRITICISM OF DOMINION’S SOCIAL , • ORDER (By Telograph—Press Association) ’ NAPIER, 17th April. Defects in the social order of New Zealand to-dav were severely criticised hy Archdeacon W. E. Maclean at the, Anglican General Synod to-day, when he advocated m.it the elnirdi i;si iv>rv effort to transform the social order, so as to bring it nearer the mind of Christ, lie expressed the view that New Zealanders were too much inclined to sit back and do nothing. *■ His criticisms followed a., motion moved by him and uitorw-r L carried- " That this synod, while recognising the duties of Christians to assist those in distress, cannot rest content with the performance of works of mercy within the framework of an un-Christian environment, but is convinced that the Church must use every effort <o transform our social order so ns to bring it nearer the mind of Christ.”

“Wo should be warv e? any attempt merely to build as we have built before,” Archdeacon Taylor said. "Here we are at tile parting of the ways, and we have to choose which way we take. Lot it be a point of honour that.we will not let the conditions remain ns they are to-day.” A motion moved by Canon Neild was carried. Its effect was that Archdeacon Young and Canon Neild he appointed a 'commission to arrange for the publication of one or more volumes of sermons for lay-renders, on lie fines cf those previously published, and that the synod set aside .£SO to assist this work. It was decided that the next meeting of the General Synod be bold at Hamilton in 1937. on a date to be arranged.
