BLENHEIM SALE

An advance of up to Is 6d per bead all round, both in ike fat and store departments, was registered at Wednesday’s Blenheim stock sale when, perhaps as a result of the recent rain, or tlic fact that a. fortnight hail elapsed since the previous sale, a decidedly healtlner tone was noticeable (reports the “Express;”). There was an unusually large representation of buyers, and many of the better quality pens met with keen competition. The average quality of the fats—4l3 of which were penned—was particularly good. The store yarding was much larger than was the case at the last sale, 2114 sheep being offered, but many of these could only be described as low-conditioned, although there were numerous drafts of attractive sheep included. Towards the end of the auction a. shower of rain fell, and this caused a rapid thinning-out in the ranks of the buyers, the auctioneers being left to lament I lie fact that the absence of “the whistle” had caused the sale to drag on interminably during the. earlier stages. Eat lambs were more numerous than usual. Several “lightish” pens sold at from 15s to 15s 3d and medium quality changed hands at 16s 6d and 16s Bd. A single heavy lamb realised 19s lOd. At the last sale the range was from 17s to 19s 7d. Prime ewes realised from 13s 8d to 15s 2d; from 14s to 14s 5d being quite a popular limit. Medium sorts fetched from 12s 4d to 13s 3d. A fortnight ago the range of prices was from 10s 6d to 14s lOd. The only wethers offered, two prime pens, commanded 16s lOd and 18s Id. Two. four, six and eight-tooth ewes met with the greatest demand among the stores, half-breds selling at 15s and 18s 2d for a. splendid line, and tlireoquarterbreds 11s 6d. Halfbred soundmouth ewes went at 11s and 14s 3d, and some low-conditioned crossbreds at 10s Id. An assortment of f. and f.m. ewes were knocked down at from 5s 6d to 9s 3d, the latter figure being given for some good full-mouth cross-breds. Very few wethers were offered. Six and eight-tooth and s.m. merinos made 9s 6d and 9s 9d respectively, a line of forward halfbreds 12s lOd and. a draft of two-tooth crossbreds 13s 9d. The feature of the lamb entry was .a pen of fat and forward southdown-cross wethers, which were run up to 15s 6d. Threeq’narterbred ewe lambs fetched 10s, wethers 9s sd, and forward crossbred wethers 12s 6d. A line of halfbred wether lambs was quitted at 9s lOd.
