MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION
MOTOR CAR ENGINE WRECKED RELIEF WORKER INJURED (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCkLAND, This Day. A mysterious explosion wrecked the engine of a motor car in the Birkenhead Borough Council’s yard this morning. A relief worker, Thomas Barker, was struck by /lying metn] and suffered serious head injuries. Four others narrowly escaped. The car, which was used daily, was being cranked by the timekeeper, C. Hayson, when the explosion occurred. Fragments of the engine flew in every direction, and Barker was struck near the eye, and bled profusely. It is believed the explosion was caused by gelignite placed in tho engine. No explosives are kept in the. council yard. The car had been used daily by the borough observer, C. Bridge. The police are investigating.
