Two new Australian Governors have already started to dispute which is the pre-eminent State, and which the finest capital, but neither mentions Sydney or New South Wales.

Lord Huntingfield, the new Governor of Victoria, at a farewell luncheon, described Victoria as the pre-eminent State, and Melbourne as the finest'capital in any Dominion. The Dominion Secretary, Mr ,1. H. Thomas, said he was delighted that Victoria, after three years, again recoonised that a Governor was a- real link with the King. It would he a sad day when any State failed to realise the value of that link. Sir Archibald Weigall, former Governor, congratulating Major-General Winston Dugan, the new Governor of South Australia, who was present, said that evervone envied him his luck. After the luncheon, Maior-General Du nan, in the. course of conversation, declared: “Tt is all very fine for Lord Ilnntimdield to describe Victoria as the pre-eminent State, hut, in truth,_ that honour belongs to South Australia. “T hope my duties will not confine me too much’ to Adelaide. I am most anxious to meet the blokes outback, especially the Diggers.”
