UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM

POSITION FOR COMING WINTER CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES REQUESTED

At yesterday’s mectiitg of the Nelson Harbour Board it was decided to ask the local unemployment committee to call a conference including representatives of local bodies in the district to discuss the unemployment problems of the coining winter. The matter was introduced by Mr W. C. Harley who made reference to the recent resignation of Mr G. Page, chairman of the local unemployment committee, and Mr Harley pointed out tlie reasons for Mr Page’s action. If there was not sufficient in the Government funds, he' considered the local •bodies were under a duty to find sufficient money to keep the unemployed people in the necessities of life. Last year a schedule of works was prepared and that work assisted in relieving a lot of distress. ■' He moved that the unemployments committee be asked to call a conference including representatives from all the local bodies in tiie district to discuss the unemployment problems of the coming winter. It was only through the co-operation of tlie local bodies that something could he done. He had not followed closely tlie expenditure from the unemployment fund, but life could not sec how many of tlie men were feeding their children, not to mention themselves and their wives, on the amounts they were receiving fit present. It was time someone took a greater interest in the matter.

The motion was seconded by Mr G Munson.

The chairman (Mr A. Gould) said the motion was a wise and prudent one iiiid he would ask members to support
