NELSON COLLEGES

COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS MONTHLY MEETING HELD The monthly meeting of the Council of Governors of the Nelson Colleges was held last evening, there being present: Mr C. R, Fell (chairman). Mrs Childs, Messrs W. Lock, C. Collins, C. Milner, F. Cullen, S. Kenning, 11. ALmore, A. E. Max, Frank Hamilton, Dr. W . D. S. Johnston. Mr F. V. Knapp was granted leave of absence.

Accounts amounting to 83145 9s 2d were passed for payment. The report of the supervisor of tbe technical classes was read and adopted. The report of the meeting of the technical committee stated that the Education Board wrote advising that complaints had been received from parents regarding the commencement of certain classes at 8.30 a.m. and the continuation until 12.30 p.m. The Supervisor pointed out that in order to comply with the regulations and to cope with the number of classes, two lessons of two hours were given in the morning, i.e., 8.30 to 10.30 and 10.30 to 12.30, and that no school attended at these times for more than one morning per week. The committee recommended that as the present arrangement is made in the interests of the annual pupils, no alteration could be made without prejudice to the amount of teaching they would receive. It was resolved to send the report of the committee to the Education Board and to state that the Board had apS roved of the committee’s recommendaon.

It was also resolved that authority be given to appoint a part-time teacher for evening classes in commercial. The report of the Principal of the Girls’ College was read. The Principal reported that a reduction in staff was compelled by the regulations. It was resolved that upon receipt of formal notice from the Department of the necessity of taking the step, that a junior teacher be given notice oi the termination of her services, and to express regret. The report of the Principal of the Boys’ College was read. A matter of the periodic inspection of the boarders teeth was referred to tbe bouse committee.

An invitation was extended to members of the Council to attend Old Boys Day at the College on Saturday next. It was resolved to approve of the suggestion of the Principal regarding a change in periods during the winter term.

The matter of new fives courts was deferred, the house committee to consider it before next meeting. Requisition for stock by the agriculture class was granted. The Minister of Education wrote in reference to new buildings, stating that it was regretted that, money was mot available for the erection of a technical block at present, but when it was the Minister would be pleased to arrange for Mr Latrobe and Mr Savage to visit Nelson and inspect. The Public Works Department wrote with reference to the levelling and improving of tlie Franklyn street property, stating that an engineering survey was being carried out at an early date.

11. M. and M. Field wrote offering a property for sale in Tipalii street, which might be used as football grounds. It was resolved that the offer be declined. It was resolved that it be a direction to- the two Principals to confer with two booksellers to come to some equitable arrangement regarding the sale of school books.

It was resolved that the Board take no action in reference to official journal of New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Association.

It was decided to make the usual conveyance grant to the Wakapuaka school committee.

Mr Atmorc moved that inquiries be made as to the possibility of arranging outdoor sketching classes for girls who desired. The motion was carried.
