FIRE BOARD MATTERS
PURCHASE OF ENGINE APPROVED OUESTION OF VALUE OF NEW STATION SITE The Mayor (Mr W. J. MoiValt) reported on several Fire Board matters to last night’s meeting of the City Council, lie explained that a difficulty had arisen in regard to the price to be paid for the suggested site in Halifax street. He had gone into this matter when in Wellington and the Loans' Board now had a local resident making a valuation ol the. area. , It was pointed out that the Loans Board valued the property at £2OO, and the Council at £IOOO. Mr Moffatt said that .(lie hoard now had no objection to the situation ol the proposed site and the. architect had been authorised to go to Wellington to confer with the Public Works Engineer. He hoped 'that at a not far distant date the construction of the station would he proceeded with. Councillor 11. E. A. Washbourn: “Could not the council protest to the Minister against the obstructions and red tape, and difficulties presented by the Loans’ Board?”
The Mayor replied that he would prefer to await the result of the present negotiations. However if there were anv iurther delays he would be agreeable to a protest. Continuing, the Mayor said the. Loans' Board had approved of the purchase of a new fire engine, and he reminded the council that it still had to deal with the disposal of the old engine, which was at present on lo.ift to the. Fire Board by the council. He understood the Richmond brigade wanted the engine.
The disposal of the old engine was referred to committee.
