DEFINITE STEP FORWARD

ALTHOUGH the report presented to the City Council last evening by the City Engineer and released for publication hv the Council is short, it is to the point, and represents many weeks’ investigation. It is the first big step taken hv the City Council for many years towards a really practical, commonsense, and far-seeing solution of the water problem. Tt may seem to some that the Council discussion of the report, last evening was indefinite, hut it should ho home in mind that councillors could not be expected at that meeting to deal otherwise than tentatively with such large and far-reaching issues. We feel sure the public will give the report very careful consideration. Councillors will have the opportunity of planning for the people's well-being long after they have passed from the scene of their labours. And probably they will have an opportunity of taking the first step towards broader and better things in local body government. In looking back to the initiation of the Nelson service, though over sixty years, the observer sees the wisdom and foresight of the first planners. May the residents of sixty years .hence have cause to pay tribute to those responsible for the larger development which is imperative to-day.
