O'DUFFY RELEASED
CHEERED ON LEAVING GAOL
MILITARY TRIBUNAL TRIAL (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 23rd December, 8.40 a.m.) DUBLIN, 22nd December. Ln the High Court, Mr Justice. O'Bryne ordered General O’Dull'y’s immediate release. He said it was impossible to conclude tliat Superintendent Murray's reason for the arrest was the suspicion that O’Duffy was a member of an illegal organisation. The Public Safety Act conferred wide powers on the police and must be construed most favourably to the. liberty of the subject. The only reasonable inference was tliat the men arrested were wearing blue shirts and attempted to address a meeting. “I am satisfied that the Act provides no arrest in such circumstances,” said Mr Justice O'Byrne. He granted General O’DufTy and Captain Sullivan their costs. Both were loudly cheered on- leaving gaol. It is understood General O’Duffy and Captain Sullivan will be released and tried by ;i military tribunal on a charge of suspected belonging to an illegal organisation.
NEWSPAPER OFFICE RAIDED LONDON, 21st December. Detectives entered the premises of the. newspaper “An Phoblacht” and seized all copies. Simultaneously they confiscated the latest issue of Mr Cosgravc's “United Ireland” containing General O’Duffy’s undelivered speech. It is understood they.acted on instructions from the military tribunal. The “Daily Mail’s” Dublin correspondent says that Mr Cosgrave has been appointed president of the United Ireland party in General O’Duffy’s absence. Mr Blythe is deputising as director of the League of Youth.
