Otago won the toss and batted. The score at noon was one wicket for 46 runs. Knight, b Hope lb Cavanagh, not put 16 Maloney, run out 4 Cavanagh and Knight opened in steady fashion against the bowling of Hope and Cromb. Hope was accurate, but Cromb could not settle down. Both batsmen. scored with shots behind the wicket. With the score at 35 Knight was bowled by Hope when 18. Moloney joined Cavanagh. Against Roberts, Cromb and Riley the batsmen found it hard to collect runs.
