MOTUEKA

HOLIDAY ATTRACTIONS E.S.A. GALA ON BOXING DAY (From Our Own Correspondent) The Motueka branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association has arranged for another of its popular galas at the Safe Bathing Society’s property at the Motueka beach on Boxing Day, Tuesday next, and in view of the worthy object, that of obtaining funds for the relief of distress in the district, there should be a record attendance.

Chief among the many attractions will be the presence of the 12th (Nelson) Regimental Band. There will be popular launch excursions over the harbour and sports will serve to entertain the younger generation. Numerous • stalls and sideshows will enliven the proceedings and serve to make the day a truly festive occasion. ITot water will be provided free to patrons throughout the day. In the evening at the Institute Hall the committee will be staging another popular R.S.A. dance. The additions and alterations recently completed at the Hall make for excellent arrangements for dancing and the evening’s entertainment should provide a fitting conclusion to a most enjoyable day.

AMATEUR ATHLETICS On Thursday next the public of Motueka are to have the opportunity of seeing in action a team of'athletes from the Sydenham Club, of Christchurch, which is one of the strongest in Christchurch, and includes C. W. Bell, a young mile runner of great promise; N. J. Fitzsimmons and C. G. Gordon, the latter the second sprinter in Canterbury. Mr W. J. Calderwood is to manage the team and is accompanied by two officials of the club Mr C. Fulford and Mr L. G. Willis. Tlie local club is making great efforts to produce an excellent entertainment for the public and visitors alike, and a meeting, commencing at 5 p.m. on Thursday, and consisting of sixteen events, will be well worth seeing. There are several field event men in the team and interesting competition will eventuate in this department.

This is the second annual visit of this club to this end of the South Island and eventuated chiefly from a desire on the part of Sydenham Club members to assist in the improvement of amateur athletics here. That the team last season enjoyed their visit thoroughly is exemplified by the increase in the number in their team this year. At all events a most interesting evening meeting should be the case, and the club is making a nominal charge at the gate to defray incidental expenses. The Motueka Amateur Athletic Club is to be commended for its enterprise in assisting the visitors to display their prowess to the local public and a good attendance will undoubtedly result.
