QUEEN’S GARDENS POND

[To the Editor] 1 Sir,—May I, through the medium ’of your paper, draw the City’Council’s attention, to tlie state of the pond, in the Queen’s Gardens. For many years the pond there has been inadequately flushed, in spite of the fact that for nine months in the year, millions of gallons of water run to waste down the, Broqk. At the present time the pond is in a disgraceful state and this at' a,'season when many visitors arc >in the City. As a ratepayer I feel ashamed of our Queen’s Gardens and of our reserves generally. There seems to he an air of neglect. It is not a matter of drought conditions, fci even when water is abundant-, the pond in the gardens is'always unsatisfactory but the trouble seems to lie in the pipes being too small or perhaps they are blocked. At any rate a ridiculously small volume of water is running into the pond aiid none'-atMill seems to be running out. There is hot a place in New Zealand where conditions are easier for flushing and yet I Have heard many uncomplimentary remarks lately about the pond. The trouble- is that the City Council does not see the necessity for action, and yet I seem -to recollect that about twelve months ago instructions were' given to clear the pipes and put the matter right,,, If this is so why nas the work not been done? —I am, etc.. DISGUSTED. Nelson 21st December. . ~
