ON THE TURF

TROTTING FIXTURES December 26 —Gore T.C. December 20—Ashburton T.CDecember 26, 27—Wairarapa T.C. December 26, 27—Westport T.C. December 27', 29. 30 Auckland T.C. December 2S—Winton I.C.

Ringing Cheer lias given every satisfaction in his work during the last few weeks, and his trip to the West Coast meetings should be attended with more than one success. He appears to have thrown off the persistent soreness which has compelled a very limited programme with him for some time past, and in some useful work he did at Riccarton this week there was no sign of any ailment. Hinging Cheer is a brilliant galloper when properly tuned up, and the coast tracks will suit him. Mr F. Hall who lost the services ot Sports. King at the South Canterbury spring meeting in October, recently acquired from the breeder, Hr A. S. George, a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Robespierre from a half-sister by Solfcrino to Rapier. Ihe gelding is well grown, and altnough he has not heen in work lor any length of time, lie is very forward,,,aud has attracted attention at Riccarton by. his smooth and ■effortless stylo of moving, lie is to- be given every chance, and will not he raced until well into the New Year. Conference, who created a favourable impression by his running in the hack sprint at Napier last Saturday, is • a four-year-old chestnut gelding by the Autummis horse Autumn Horn le Ngira, by Polydamon from the imported mare Slipstitch. Te Ngira is the first foal of her dam, and likewise Conference is the first of her 1 oals alive. In her first season she slipped twins, awl the next season missed both to Autumn. Conference lias not done much racing, but he was a maiden winner at the Poverty Bay meeting last February. Apart from what, he may do on the flat, he looks the right type for the jumping game. Dorada, who ran promisingly at Napier in his first public appearance, belongs to Mr T. 11. Lowry’s Desert Gold family, being by Grandcourt from D'.Oro, a sister to Desert Gold and dam of the speedy Coronilla. Dorada was sent up at the 1932 sales, but was a backward yearling, and passed in at 20 guineas. Dorada finished fourth aitei a promising showing and all going well will win races. Manetlio is at present on the easy list, and unless be is able to resume work in a few days may hot be raced during the holidays. He received a knock on a back tendon either during or after his race at Riccarton last Saturday, and the leg is very much filled. It- was intended to send him south for the Waikouaiti Cup, and to miss the Oamaru meeting, at which he is considered to be unfavourably handicapped.

The high opinion formed of the two-year-old Sir John, by Liniond iroin Jewel of .Asia, can be realised from the fact that lie was supported last week to win the Centenary Melbourne Cup next year, notwithstanding that entries do not close until June next. R. Reed lias been left without a ride in the Auckland Cup as a result of the defection of Brambletorn. He will, however, pilot Croupier, Catalogue, Rerepai,' Whcnnakura, and Dollar Prince on the opening day. Returning home before the second day of the Manawatu fixture, he will ride Royal Routine, Diatomour. (Stakes), All Humbug. Dombey, and Lone Raider.

NOTES AND COMMENTS ON GALLOPS AND TROTTING

The Great Northern Derby may provide a stern struggle of the four-tlirec-year-okis engaged, but if form is to be taken into account Chancellor appears to command the position, states the

"Press.’’ The only horse in the race with any pretensions to form in public, the son of Peterwah should have little difficulty in silencing the opposition, and his supporters on the totalizator will have to accept very cramped odds on his chances. The Auckland classic has provided many sterling races, and several horses that have won the race have gone on to still bigger things on the trotting track. To secure a license from the New Zealand Trotting Association, a driver must be physically fit, and though there have been reinsmen who had lost a leg, a one-armed man would have little chance of being given the opportunity to drive in a race. Not so in America, for the November issue of “Hoof Beats” has the following:—“At Sednlia, I saw Ambrose Johnson, a one-armed man, driving trotters and pacers in races, and, what is more, lie was doing a good job of it. His horses acted as good horses should. Not once did I notice him spoiling a score by coming down far in front of the pole horse, vet lie was able to get away with the field and he won money with two horses out of three starts—not a bad showing. When I see trainers coming down, several lengths ahead, and see them tug and pull, I cannot help thinking of Ambrose Johnson.”. Backers of Cimarron in the Christmas Handicap, on the first day of the Auckland meeting, will have to accept a very short price about the chances of the four-year-old, who is regarded as a coming champion. In his last five starts be has won Jour races, and at the last Auckland meeting was not extended over a mile and a quarter in 2.47. Cimarron is another of the stock of Worthy Bond to attract attention, and his dam. Edna, by Havoc from Sylvia K., left other useful performers in Kevin Brae, Derby Lynn, and Bingen Crest. Mosl of those engaged in the race have revealed their best form and this is the opportunity for a young, improving pacer like Cimarron. J. S. Shaw has taken Margaret Clionnult to Auckland, and in the Grandstand Handicap on the opening day she is handicapped on the limit of a 3.38 class. At New Brighton recently this marc, showed the possession of rare speed and stamina by giving a field of 30 horses up to 48 yards start and finishing a very close second to Young Travis after covering the 12 furlongs in 3.24 4-5. A repetition of this form will find her well forward at the fiiyyjfi, even though the field includes Indian Author. Bingen Chief, and Red Hope. Earlier in the day Margaret Chenault may contest the December Handicap, in 'which she is set to give away 48 yards to a big field. A win in this race will not entail a penalty that will greatly affect her cliancc in her later engagement.
