CORRESPONDENCE Among the correspondence received at the. meeting were the following matters: — , The residents of Wellington street wrote in regard to the, condition ol n ditch and the formation of a footpath. When asked to explain the. position the City Engineer said it was the same old complaint. The request was lor the covering of a ditch. Recently the Council had given attention to it by cleaning it out. fn answer to Councillor Watson the Engineer said the estimated cost of the work would be £2OO.

Councillor Russell moved that in keeping to the custom of the Council in similar cases, the Council provide half the cost of the work if those residents concerned contributed the other, half. Councillor Gibbs: “Where is the £IOO coming from?” The Mayor commented that the applicants may not “conic at ’ the £IOO. Councillor Gibbs: “Don t he too sure. He pointed out that other local bodies had made a similar mistake, an example being the Main Highways Board’s proposal in regard to the Dash wood Pass. Councillor Russell’s motion lapsed for want of a seconder.

On the motion of Councillor Gibbs, seconded by Councillor Washbourn, it was decided to inform tlie applicants that owing to the state of the Council’s finances it cannot accede to tlie request. Councillor Russell opposed the motion. Application was made by the Abattoir Manager for permission to purchase a new steelyard. The request was granted. Mr C. M. I-Toult submitted a sketch ol a proposed sub-division in Russell street for approval. It was decided that a committee inspect the section and report to the Council. . . On behalf of Mr 11. G. Foster-Barham the dedication of a piece of land and a claim to compensation was forwarded. It was decided to accept the dedication, but to inform the interested party’s solicitor that the Council did not admit the claim.

The Committee reported: — , 1. —(a). That representatives from the Richmond Borough Council, the Tahunanui Town Board, the Waimea County Council and the Stoke Progressive Association were received. (b) That Mr Strand, representing the Hume Pipe Company, Ltd., outlined a scheme for supplying water to Nelson, Tahunanui, Stoke" and Richmond, (c) That alter discussion it was vosolvcd i lliat the adjoining local bodies he asked to confirm their "estimates/of their water requirements and the minimum -amount of financial assistance they are prepared to guarantee, and that the City Engineer lie instructed to prepare an estimate ol the cost of bringing water from the Boding River into Poornian’s Valley and laying pipes to reservoirs at Nelson, lahunanui, Stoke, and Richmond on the lines of the scheme outlined by Mr Strand. 2. That Messrs Glasgow, Rout and Cheek he asked to convey to the Misses .Bennett tlie Councils thanks lor the public spirit shown by them and intorined that the Council does not think it desirable to proceed on the lines .suggested by them. 2. —Tiiat the Council endeavour to obtain from tlie Misses Bennett an undertaking that in the event of their desiring to sell the property they will give the Council the first offer and that otherwise tlie mutter, he left in abeyance until the properly is required and that it then lie taken under the Public Works Act. CITY ENGINEER The City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight ending 21st December, as follows: Streets and Footways. —Necessary maintenance only lias been done and the usual cleaning up is being attended to. Reserves. —Routine maintenance has received attention. A pump has been installed at the Queen’s Gardens for watering purposes. The pond lias fallen so low it is necessary to pump water into in. The Norinanhy bridge station has been used ior this purpose. The well and pump at An/,ac Park arc ready, hut owing to the urgency of the work at the Mailai it has not been possible to put in the pipes. Drainage.—There have been no interruptions in the systems. Water.-—Work at llauby Park has been pushed on and it is hoped to connect up temporarily with the main in N.ilo street by the end of the week. The hit' dam fell to 10ft bill, below the overflow, but rose with the rain at the beginning of the week and to-day is down 6fl 7in. I The analysis of the Normnnhy bridge well is still unsatisfactory. Those for the Mailai well give a good report. A parly of five men are engaged on the survey of the Roiling river. The.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported:— City applications, 2763 (increase 5); city extensions, 3722 (increase 25); Tahuna applications, 216 (increase nil) ; Stoke applications, 113 (increase nil): Wakatu applications, 30 (increase nil). Total, 6844 (increase 30). Lighting load applied for, 1590 k.w. (increase 3 k.w.); heating load applied for, 3706 k.w. (increase 13 k.w.); power load applied for, 1953 k.w. (increase 1 k.w.); Taliuna load applied for, 318 k.w. (increase nil); Stoke load applied for, 151 k.w. (increase nil); Wakatu load applied for, 61 k.w. (increase nil). Total, 7779 k.w. (increase 17 k.w.). Peak load, day, 480 k.w.; night, 640 k.w. The turbine was stopped on tho. morning of the 9th December to allow the staff to clean the condenser and oil cooler tubes. The sea circulating pipes have been taken up and cleaned of marine growth. Satisfactory guarantees have been obtained and we are extending tlie reticulation at the top of Maori road. To date three extra street lamps have been erected in Kawai street, Eckipgton Terrace and South street. The Other three will be erected as time permits. ABATTOIR MANAGER The Abattoir Manager (Mr G. W. Mitchell) submitted his report as follows : Stock slaughtered during the fortnight ending to-day were as follows: 86 cattle, 21 calves, 607 sheep, 180 lambs, 47 pigs; total, 941. Condemned during tlie period, two sheep. The reports were adopted. GENERAL BUSINESS On the motion of Councillor Iluggins, it was decided to instruct the Engineer to inspect and carry out any necessary repairs to the footpath in Alton street from Hardy street to Griffin’s mill. Councillor Page pointed out that the condition of Harper street was anything but satisfactory, and it was decided that it receive attention. SEASONAL GREETINGS It being the last meeting before Christinas, the business was expedited, and at 9.35 p.m., after the Mayor had extended seasonal greetings to members of the Council and to tho staff, ho invited those present to supper in the Mayor’s room.

The Mayor said he wished to thank members for tho support they had given him during the year. To the staff he also extended his sincerest thanks. Notwithstanding the trials and tribulations of the Council—especially in regard to the latest trouble, the water, which he was thankful to say had been relieved by the rain, and for which difficulty there were now prospects of getting over by the work being undertaken —the Council had served the public well through its staff. He wished members of the Council and of the whole staff a Merry Christmas and Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Councillor R. Watson, on behalf of councillors, reciprocated the Mayor’s remarks, wishing him “a Merry Christmas and a better New Year.”
