WAIROA MEATWORKS

THE ANNUAL REPORT (By Telegraph—Press Association) WAIROA. 29th November. The Wairoa meatworks were badly shattered by the earthquake in 1931 and two days later subjected to fire, which destroyed the freezing chambers and damaged other departments. Efforts to raise money to re-establish the works have been made since then, but without success. An attempt to sell the works outside the organisation was defeated on being put to the shareholders, It now appears that there is every likelihood of another effort being made to re-establish the works, as the chairman of the board of directors (Mr Jessep), in the nineteenth annual report, states that sheep-farmer shareholders in the Wairoa district are suffering heavy loss on fat stock through the cost of transport to Gisborne and Napier and depreciation whilst in transit. The direceoi’s therefore have concentrated on restoring the works on sound working lines, and hope that this object will he achieved in the coming year on a basis which will protect the capital and interests of the shareholders. The report says that the property includes 55 acres of valuable land, 12 residences, the company’s offices, the factory and the undamaged plant, entirely free and unencumbered. In addition the company has a cash credit balance of £3368, and trading stocks valued at £1796. All the buildings and machinery, etc., have been well maintained. The machinery and plant were revalued in 1932 at £34,509. ■!*>«•>*»- m.
