[ A DRAWN GAME e At Motueka on Saturday afternoon - the Nelson and Bays’ Unions’ repres sentatives played a drawn game—ll n points all. There was a. large atttend- - ance, and the weather was fine and . calm. The teams were:— l NELSON f Full back: Glover, f Three-Quarters: Busch, Watson, Boyce. Five-eighths: Stewart, • Carey. Half-back: Thompson. Forwards: Smith, Clark, Ferguson, Taylor; Max, Chatterton, D. Max, McLean. t BAYS e Full-back: Courtenay. Three-quarters: Douglas, 11. Donnelly (capt.), Pyne. s Five-eighths: 0. Lunn, Alps, n Half: Rogers. a Forwards: Williams, Leitn, Druma mond, Schwass,. Buttress, Blincoe, DauJ do, Munt. e Nelson kicked off, Bays being favoure ed by a light wind and with the sun at their backs. Play settled in Bays’ y territory until Pyne made a sharp dash, j but Boyce was safe. Bay forwards came .. away with a dribbling rush and were j almost over. Boyce tackled, but Pyne v recovered to elude Glover and scored for Bays well out. Dando missed the kick. Bays 3, Nelson 0 On resuming penalties were given to each side, and the game changed rapidly, Watson being outstanding in defence. From a line-out play moved across field to see Thompson send to e Carey to Stewart and Watson who sent 1) on to Boyce at the 25 to go over for a e try. Stewart missed the kick. Bays 3, Nelson 3 Midfield play followed with Nelson gaining the ascendancy. A bright movement by McLean was responsible for Nelson’s next score. He made a dash from the 25 to hand to Ferguson to Busch, to score in a handy position. Stewart converted. Nelson 8, Bays 3 There was no further score at half- ■ time. On resuming Bays took play to Nol- j son’s line, where tho defenders were i penalised, enabling Drummond to eon--0 vert. •* Bays 6, Nelson 8 ' 1- . Bays continued the attack, sterling „ work by Williams, Dando, Lcitli and , Douglas being fruitless. Douglas was almost over, but Nelson recovered, Watson being prominent. Exciting play, followed, good tackling being a feature. Nelson was compelled to force. A fore ward struggle with much ragged play ; was brightened when Thompson securf ed to send out to his backs, and Busch * raced down the line for a try. Stewart 1 missed with the kick. Nelson 11, Bays 6 Play continued on the Bays’ line, ! when Nelson made a-determined effort ; to get over; but a force-down relieved | Bays. brilliant dash by Boyce, and phjy was again in Bays territory. Williams, Schwass and Dando relieved and set up ail attack. Stewart held the attack ami sent to Watson to Boyce, who broke through. From the line-out Williams and Hunt broke away, and Nelson was pressed. Attempts by the Bays backs to open up play were thwarted by t-he ’ fast-breaking Nelson lorwards headed •by McLean and Ferguson. Williams secured from a line-out and booted upfield, Schwass following through fast to see Clover clear. From tight play in mid-field Arps secured to send to I Douglas to Williams, who put in a j high punt. Fast following up by Schwass had Glover bustled, and Pyne, who was also handy, won the race Jor the ball and touched down amid great excitement. R. Drummond evened the scores by converting. NELSON 11, BAYS 11 At half-time Stewart, who recoiled an injured foot, was relieved._by his brother. Mr C. James refereed. The best Nelson forwards were D. Max, McLean and Ferguson, while : Busch was the most prominent hack. For Bays, Dando, Schwass, Williams -and Buttress in the forward division land Pyne and Arps in the backs were the most proniinctn. Boyes converted. Motucka 5, Nelson 0. Nelson retaliated, a kick was quickly followed tip and Young, beating the full hack, touched down. Logan converted. Nelson 5, Motucka 5. With the scores evened Nelson again broke through. From a scrum the ball travelled to Young, who scored near the posts. Young also added the major points. Nelson 10, Motucka 5. Within the next minute Nelson again had Motucka in difficulties. A passing rush by Pike to Page to Stallard to Bothivell saw the last named over the line. Nelson 13, Motucka 5. A further effort by Nelson was checked by Ryder clearing with a good line kick. On resuming Nelson, which was an older and heavier team than Motucka again took the offensive. Young secured in the 25 and passed to Logan to finish. Nelson l(i, Motucka 5. The visitors continued to fight out the issue on the home ground, and, following a live yards scrum, the ball was handled by .Stallard, Pike, and Chapman, the last named scoring. Nelson 19, Motucka 5. Stallard started the next movement for Nelson at half-way, and Pike dashed over for a try. Young converted. Nelson 24, Motucka 5. Motucka rallied somewhat for Dredge to take play to Nelson’s line. A counter attack followed and Pike again scored. Nelson 27, Motueka 5. A smart recovery by Motueka saw the home team battling for an opening., A penalty against Nelson was missed by Boyes. The match concluded with the scores unaltered. Mr G. Fowler controlled the match. RETAINED BY WEST COAST BULLER BEATEN BY 7 TO 3 (By Telegraph—Press Association) GPLYMOUTH, 19th August. Tho third Seddou Shield match of the season was played at Rugby Park, Greymoutli, to-day, West Coast facing the challenge of the Buffer. The weather was ideal, but the ground was slightly holding. The, attendance was about 3500. The Coast team was unchanged from the two previous matches. When play had been in progress 15 minutes Fong kicked a Held goal. West Coast 4, Buffer 0. When Coast backs were out of position a try was scored for Butler by Hill on the wing in the corner. Holder’s attempt to convert was charged down. Coast 4, Buffer 3. The half-time score was unchanged. Shortly after resumption Jones, a Coast forward, went off injured, and was replaced by Jamieson. After thirty minutes B. Scaixrett received a pass and Martyn scored an unconverted try for Coast. There was no further score, the game ending: Coast 7, Buffer 3. ANNUALMATCH AUCKLAND DEFEAT HAWKES BAY THRILLING FINISH AUCKLAND, 19th August. The annual Rugby representative match between Auckland and llawkes Bay was played at Eden. Park in fine weather. There was a large crowd. Auckland won by 21 points to 17. The game, which was fast and open throughout, provided a thrilling finish as the visitors made a great last-minute effort to puff the match out of the fire, and laid to crowd on their toes with passing rushes. TARANAKI DEFEAT WANGANUI NEW PLYMOUTH, 19th August. Tanuialri’y drastically re-organised Rugby team, defeated Wanganui by 27 points to 19. Taranaki’s backs were an efficient scoring machine, and would have compiled many more points had they received a reasonable slmro of tho ball. Taranaki scored seven tries, Ross converting three. Wanganui’s hooking was much superior to that'of Taranaki, and tlie backs had plenty of opportunities, but they were generally smothered. In tho second spell Wanganui secured the ball almost monotonously, but whenever it came to the Taranaki backs they went away with fine passing rushes. Rutherford, the Taranaki centre, was the outstanding back on the field. MAORI FIXTURE WANGANUI, 19th August. The Taranaki Maoris beat Wanganui Maoris by 22 points to 15.
