SMUGGLED WIRELESS SET
(By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, 18th August. Humphrey Owen Stevens was fined £25 to-day for smuggling a wireless set valued at £2O from the Vancouver steamer at Auckland. The duty payable was £9 8s Bd. He pleaded guilty, but his counsel said the plea would have been not guilty were it not that the Customs Act said that the absence of intent to defraud was no defence. The Alagistrate imposed a minimum fine and ordered the forfeiture of the set.
