GISBORNE UNEMPLOYED
COMPLAINT OP DESTITUTION, (By Telegraph—Press Association) GISBORNE', 17th August. Reference to numerous necessitous cases in Gisborne was made to-day at a meeting of the Cook Hospital Board, the chairman (Mr M. R. Trai’lord) stating that a deputation of fifty men had waited on the board intimating that they were absolutely destitute on account of the Unemployment' Board not giving work in stand-down weeks, which in Gisborne occur every alternate week. These men, stated the chairman, were allowed to earn an average of only 19s 9d a week for married men and 9s a week for single men. After discussion, it was decided to send a telegram to tlie Minister of Ein r plovment urging that an allocation bo in ado to Gisborne so that relief men will receive at least one day’s work in the stand-down weeks, as the Hospital Board cannot accept the responsibility for those men, no provisions being made in the estimates for lit men.
