LOWER FREIGHTS
NEW ZEALAND TO ENGLAND AUTHORITATIVE STATEMENT (United Press Association —By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 18th August, 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, 17th August. Although the details of the New Zealand produce freight contracts will not be disclosed before the end of the month, it is authoritatively stated that the rates will be lowered. AUSTRALIAN POSITION (Received ISth August, 10.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The “Herald” says that prospects of ail agreement between oversea shipowners aiul shippers of Australian produce to the United Kingdom on the question of freights are considered bright following the submission of a new offer by exporters of refrigerated produce and wool. One prominent exporter said: “We should like to know on what basis New Zealand shippers reached an agreement with the shipowners. We base our case on the disparity already existing between the rates from Australia and New Zealand.” A cable has been received from the head office of the Blue Star line emphasising the fact that although the line will shortly be running a service to New Zealand, that will not interfere with the plans to establish a service to the Commonwealth next year provided the line is not excluded from Australian freight contracts.
