THE VICTORY
Nelson's famous warship, the Victory, is the oldest in the world, and is still preserved at Portsmouth. She is Indeed a wonderful old ship, for she was launched at Chatham in 1765. The Victory had taken part in many sea. fights long before Nelson hoisted his flag in 1805 and fought the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson loved the Victory, and when he had any specially important service he could not be persuaded to leave her. After blockading Toulon, he wrote that he had not set foot out of his flagship for “two years wanting ten days.” The Victory was designed by Sir T. Slado, her dimensions being: 186 ft long, 52ft broad, and 21st 6in deep. In Nelson’s time sho had 100 guns.
