BUILDINGS IN SYDNEY
ARCHITECTS’ ASPIRATIONS EXAMPLE TO THE WORLD Sydney one day will set the world r example architecturally. The architects of Sydney have so declared. All they need to enable them to accomplish this worthy objective is the co-operation of the City Council and enthusiastic financiers. There will be no difficulty in obtaining a promise of the first; the finance is another matter, says a correspondent. The Institute of Architects is engaged in establishing a committee that will seek control of the acceptance or rejection of plans for new buildings as submitted to the City Council, so that, when the buildings have been completed, they will accord with the pictures that members of the committee have in mind. It may be that there will be sharp divisions of opinion, even among the members, upon what is art or beauty. There are fashions in architecture, as in other things. The so-called Spanish fashion in domestic architecture has been popular in eastern suburbs in recent years, but there is no guarantee that it will last. In the cleaning of city "business places and the painting of them, curious effects are achieved that would be beyond the control of such a committee as is proposed. The proprietors of a conspicuous city building recently had it painted a very bright colour. Among its grimy neighbours it stands out as a reproach.
