AMERICA DEFEATS NEW ZEALAND LOSERS’ ONLY WIN (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, lltli February. The second tennis Test between America and New Zealand was played at Stanley' street in fine weather except for a slmwer during the course of the first doubles in the late afternoon, which caused a ten minutes break. A crowd of about 4000 watched the play. The visitors won by five matches to one, this being the success of France over Gledbill. Detailed results are: Singles France beat Gledbill, 7-0 0-0. Van Ryn beat Stedman, 0-3, 0-1. Vines beat Malfroy, 10-8, 3-6, 6-3. Allison beat Angas, 8-0, 0-0. Doubles Vines and Gledbill beat Malfroy and France, 4-0, 0-2, 0-3. Allison and Van Ryn beat Angas and Stedman, 9-7, 0-8, 6-0. AN OPEN TOURNAMENT AUTHORISED BY U.S. ASSOCIATION (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) NEW YORK, 11 tli February. The United States Lawn Tennis Association’s annual meeting, held here to-day, for the first time authorised an open tournament for professionals and amateurs to he held some time during the year at Philadelphia. The step arose from a warning that the Germantown Club, of Philadelphia, one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country would be compelled to disband unless it could augment its funds through some important tournament likely to bring considerable gate receipts. The association had long resisted the open tournament idea.
