MONTHLY MEETING NEW SCHOOLS AND ADDITIONS The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board held to-day was attended by the chairman (the Hon. W. 11. Mclntyre), Messrs E. J. Seantlebury, .T. Wilkens, H. Wood, F. V. Knapp, F. Carling, W. Baigent and J. 11. Harkness Accounts amounting to £10,425 17s lid were passed for payment. The instructor in agriculture (Mr A G. Cork) reported that he had prepared a full scheme for practical nature study for standards 1 to 4, in accordance with the wish of the Education Department. The report was received. The Department declined an application i'or tit 3 establishment of a school at Anatakapau. Owing to the increased attendance at Lyell, it was considered necessary to enlarge the school, the estimated cost being £53 10s. Application for authority for the work is to be made to the Department. It was decided to move the situation of tlie school at Newton Flat, as requested hv the committee. Tile Education Department approved of the establishment of a school at Paonga, Maruia Valley. It was. reported that a request for the erection of a new school at Reefton was before the Minister. It was decided to transfer Section 1,, Block 13, Waitahu survey district to the 1 Crown. The lease held by Mr G. Lineham of section 7, block 15 in the Oparara survey district, was renewed. The chairman reported favourably on an application by Mr C. Rliinds for a lease of section 57, block 9, in the Oparara survey district. The lease was granted. The chairman’s action in regard to arrangements for new outbuildings at Birclifield was endorsed. A grant of £6 was made towards the cost of fencing at Briglitwater. A grant of £6 7s 6d, was made .towards the cost of a new tank and other small matters at Charleston. The Churchill Committee wrote thanking the Board for work carried out at the school and residence. Application for a grant towards the cost of fencing at Longford was acceded to. Application was made for a refund on the cost of installation of .electric light at Millerton. It was decided to refund £3. The Tapawera School Committee’s application for a grant towards the cost of water supply, was declined. The Westport Committee applied for a Tefund of the cost of repairing a drain. The application was granted. A report was received on the work done in January by the foreman of works. The action of the chairman and secretary in purchasing painting requirements in anticipation of the raising of the exchange rate, was confirmed. The purchases saved the board about £9O. It was decided to write to the Minister of Education thanking him for the concession made in extending the free places of pupils in post-primary schools. It was decided to call tenders for the purchase of the old school residence at Addison’s Flat. The price offered by M. L. Russ ( £l2) for the purchase of trees at the Baton, was accepted. The report of the senior inspector (Mr G. Overton) on the head teacher’s proposals for the reorganisation of the Denniston High School was received. The Inspector was not in favour of establishing special classes for mining. It was reported that suitable arrangements had been made by Mr Carling for the conveyance of Mariri children to the Lower Moutere school. The Board could not see its way to provide a conveyance for children attending the. Tiroroa school. TEACHERSHIP APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS Appointments previously made were confirmed as follows : —Motueka, head teacher, Mr H. Roclifort; Motueka, assistant mistress, Miss J. O. Mclntyre; Wakefield, assistant mistress, Miss S. L. Pitt. Resignations accepted were: Mrs M. L. Grocott, sole teacher, Tutaki; Mr, D. M. Scott, secondary assistant, Reefton; Miss K. J. Hendrie, secondary assistant. Takaka; Mr D. H. Wilmot, head teacher, Westport. It was decided to send a letter expressing the Board’s appreciation of the service's of Mr Wilmot, who was the highest graded teacher in the board’s service. Mr Wilmot has transferred to Wellington. Appointments were made as follows: — Takaka District High School, secondary assistant,' Miss Grace N. Aplin, 8.A., from Carterton D. 11.5. Reefton District High School, secondary assistant, Mr Henry J. Haigh, B.Sc., from Rewanui. Millerton, head teacher, Mr Chas. A. Rendle, from Waiwhetu.
