MOTUEKA

CRICKET ASSOCIATION SATURDAY'S MATCHES (From Our Own Correspondent) Despite weather conditions which were typical of winter on Saturday, the Motuka Association’s fixtures were continued, although some teams were unable to put their men into the field on account of pressure of work. In the senior competition, Motueka met Upper Moutere at Upper Moutere and were dismissed for 69 of which G. Talbot claimed an excellently compiled 30, his best effort this season. Theo. Drogemuller was the most successful bowler coming out with the average of 5 wickets for 8 runs. Upper Moutere at stumps had lost 5 wickets for 133, Drogemuller claiming 30, L. Sixtus and 0. Eggers 27 each and V. Sixtus 21 not out. Clark with 3 for 44 was the most successful bowler. The Motueka team, from being the best fielding side in the association, developed yesterday into the worst. In all twelve catches were not held and several boundaries given away. The bowlers’ performances, therefore, suffered somewhat severely. Upper Moulere’s fielding was keen throughout. The side is at the top of the championship series, which position is due primarily to their keenness as a team. In the junior competition Motueka defeated Tui in the first innings. Cricket and cricketers seem to have lost interest in the competitions, due perhaps to the finale of representative matches. This is to be deplored as there is much more in the game of cricket than to reach representative standard. The following are the scores: — MOTUEKA First Innings G. Talbot, c 0. GLADIOLUS SHOW CANON CROSSMAN’S EXHIBITION On Friday afternoon and evening, m St. Thomas’s Schoolroom, Canon Crossman had on show about 120 exhibits of gladiolii. Of the 90 varieties staged some were y; ell-known while others were seedlings of Canon Crossman’s own raising. A special feature of the show v.as a collection of ten varieties of yellow eladioli'.. all slightly different in shade of colour and in shape of petals. Although the flowers were all beautiful specimens and made a gorgeous iisplay, the number was much less than at w'anon Crossman’s exhibition last year. Had the gladiolii beer, shown a wee* earlier and had weather conditions been better a much great variety could have been exhibited. Owing to the heavy downpour of rain the attendance in the evening was not so large as had been expected. Supper was provided by the ladies of the guild. The proceeds from the show together with the monies obtained f/om the produce, cake and fancy work: stalls and also from the sale of the flowers at toe close of the show will be devoted to St. Thomas's Church funds.
