ROWING

RACES NEXT SATURDAY (By “Stroke’). The weather experienced during the last week has enabled the Nelson Rowing Club crews to get in some good .practice. All are looking 'forward To the iriiportarit even which takes place next Saturday. Last week-end saw quite a number cl “new comers” at the shed although Sutherland, uHiit, Griffin, Gore,' Neale and Osborne have not put in an appearance yet. All crews seem to be looking fit ail’d rowing well so that the selectors will have a difficult task to yluce the twelve men in the respective crews for Easter. Probably the two most formidable crews at the present time are Mrasliall’s and Russell’s.

Marshall has been fairly consistent. Drogemullcr has had bis share for the races and is looking very fit. Brown and Mayson, this year’s “products" are rowing well, the former being a likely man for the youths’ crew. G. P. Russell has maintained his standard and is paying a lot of attention io his crew.

D. G. Russell is also doing well while Pushman is showing keenness. Jenkins, a new member, needs a little coaching. Probably a little floor practice will do him a lot of good.

Dumbleton is keen and is anxious to get all the members out. Toll seem to be doing fairly well but must remember to keep bis eyes in the boat.

. Hill would do well to watch the style of Dumbleton. G. Winter, although a little on the light side makes a good bow. G. Rennison. with him M. Winter, make a good pair. Their time and style are good. Davis will need to look busy and watch the man in front of him.

McKenzie’s lot depends on his training. At tile same time he is another man likely for tile youths’ crew. Mytton’ for some reason or other is probably the keenest member this season but up "to the last week has had diffi - culty in getting his crews out. Nevertheless he is doing well and lie shows a marked improvement on previous years’ performances. Dyco has not been out as much is expected. He will be a great assistance to Mytton. Hobbs has more or less relaxed during the past few weeks. If he gets right down to a little bard graft lie may stand a good chance for the youths crew also, but at the same time he must remember training counts a great deal in a race. Gubb, like Hobbs, can row, but must train to gain any position. “Stroke” trusts that the five crews will face the starter next Saturday. Owing to the time being limited three races must be rowed on Saturday and the final probably on the following Monday night. There is one point which always causes a great deal of trouble when members are selected in crews. _ Lf a member is undecided to row he should act accordingly instead of causing tire trouble which' has frequently occurred. “Yes” or “No” will do it. The club has decided to run its carnival dance next Saturday following the races. The previous arrangements made will be adhered to, so that provided the club is favoured with fine weather there should be a record gathering.
