WOOL

WELLINGTON SALES FINE SORTS UP CROSSBREDS NOT WANTED (By Telegraph—Press Association; WELLINGTON, This Day. An exceptionally keen demand for all halfbreds and other fine sorts was the outstanding feature of the third AVellington wool sales of the season, held yesterday afternoon in the Town Hall. It was plain from the outset that lower grades of crossbreds were not wanted, except at low prices, and the sale of these dragged very noticeably at times. All halfbreds and similar wools were from ‘d to Id better than at the Wellington January sale, and fine crossbreds, lambs and other good pieces were from id to (,<1 up. On the other hand, medium to good topmaking crossbreds were /d to /d lower, and inferior sorts were a full /d down. Indeed, had it not been for the higher exchange rate, which was reflected in the prices, grower swould have been faced with an even greater fall. Solid support to the market for betgrades of crossbreds was given by Japan, which took a fairly large quantity The offering comprised 30,075 bales, but eleventh hour withdrawals reduced this to under 30,000 thousands. The range of prices was : Merino, 64/70, 60/64—Super up to 10'(1; average 8/d to 9/,d; inferior 7/d °Fine halfbred, 56/58— Super 10/d to 32id; average 8d to lOd; Inferior up to 7 a d. 4 Medium halfbred, 50/56— average 7/d lo 9Jd; inferior 4§d to 7/d. Levin and Company report:—The third sale of this season was held yesterday, our catalogue representing 7455 hales out of a total offering of 30,000 bales. The offering consisted of but few super crossbreds, the hulk being average wools of fair style suitable for topmaking. Since the sale on oth January conditions in overseas markets have undergone some change. There have been political disturbances in Germany which have unsettled trading conditions on the Continent, but political troubles the world over are constant and never ending bars to trade nowadays. The potent factor affecting the crossbred market to-day is the large supply of American competitive wools now being sold there at well under the New Zealand level of prices. London and Bradfijrd quotations have come down, and all terminal markets record declines. The market here yesterday was helped out by the strong demand from Japanese operators, who were very active and sustained prices which otherwise would have receded. The small supply of super crossbreds of 46/48’s quality met with excellent demand. We sold “Part T Parae/Rawhiti,” 23 bales, at 8/d, and 7 bales of hoggets at 7/d; also “TB/Waihi,” 0 bales, at 9/d, 25 "hales at Bd, 5 bales of hoggets at 7d; and “Kaiwarra” 42 bales at 7/d. Hogget wool sold well and lambs’ wool, which was in fair supply, was sold to Canada, France, Australia and Dominion mills at the best prices of the season.

We quote the following changes as against January: Merinos Id to Id up; halfbreds Id to IRI up; super fine crossbreds 40/48’s Jd to Id up; good average fine crossbreds Jd to Ad up; super medium crossbreds 44/46’s -Jd to Id up; good average crossbreds par to -id up; good coarse crossbreds 40/44’s id to Ad up; average 40/44’s and 3G/40’s "par; all' inferior wools par; bellies and pieces par; lambs’ wool Id to l|d up. The local market was helped by tho exchange, which the buyers are undoubtedly passing on to the grower. Coarse and inferior ,wools, which are in over supply and affected by South American competition, have for these reasons shown no material advance on January, but a fall in values has been averted. We sold 80 per cent, of our offering. The’New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency reports: —The third sale was held in the Town Hall on lOtli February, when a total catalogue of about 30,175 bales was submitted, our quota being approximately 4000 bales. There was a full bench of buyers representing Germany, France, Belgium, Japan, Dominion mills, and local speculators, who from the outset competed keenly for suitable lots up to their limits. Prices compared with recent sales were slightly higher for super wools. Halfbreds and fine crossbreds values were firm. Lower qualities prices were not so keen, and can be quoted a farthing easier. For bellies and pieces the demand was keen, but there was very little change in price. Lambs’ wool, of which there was only a limited supply, was keenly competed for and prices were decidedly firmer. The wool opened up disappointingly, there being an absence of super wools. The bulk was ordinary top-making sorts and lower quality crossbreds, which were inclined to be hairy, and competition was dragging.

Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report that the third Wellington wool sale was held yesterday, when a full bench of buyers was in attendance.
