TEACHERS’ SUMMER SCHOOL

TO BE HELD IN NELSON NEXT' MONTH ARRANGEMENTS WELL IN HAND An enthusiastic meeting of the local committee of the Teachers’ Summer School was presided over by the Mayor, Mr W. J. Motfatt, at the Council Chambers last evening. In presenting the programme drawn up by a sub-committee for the entertainment of the teachers during their ten days' stay in Nelson, the secretary, Mr H. F. Allan, stated that, as far as lie could see no expense would have to be borne by the local people. Mr Alf. Robinson pointed out that the city was very fortunate in having over 180 people living here for ten days, spending quite a large sum of money, while no funds had to be raised locally to support or entertain them. It was agreed that every effort should be made to extend to the visitors a warm welcome, in the hope that they would be favourably impressed with the suitability of Nelson as a site for tlie Annual Summer School.

The meeting then proceeded to discuss the programme in detail. It was decided that a civic reeption and official opening be held on the evening of Monday 9th January, in the School of Music in connection with a concert arranged from local talent. The teahers would' be welcomed by the Mayor, the member for the district, Mr Harry Atmore M.P., and representatives' of the local teachers. Mr F. W. Huggins agreed to undertake the organisation of the. concert. The secretary reported that the committee of the Nelson Automobile Association bad promised to organise a trip through the .Waimea Plains, and the local sports bodies had. expressed their willingness to co-operate in affording the visitors every opportunity to amuse themselves. The school was so arranged that the lectures took place in the mornings and the afternoons were given over to recreation. The executive of teachers, of which Mr F. Milner is president, would take in hand the whole running of the school when they arrived and it was desired that local; representatives of tlie various sports bodies should be ready to co-operate with • them. This had been arranged for.

During the discussion that followed, it was stated by Miss M. Bell who has had much experience of Summer Schools held elsewhere, that the thing that made the gathering most popular with the teachers was a general interest on the part of local people. In Whangarei last year, people had picked up teachers in their cars at any odd time and taken them for a drive or to their homes, and the general impression of friendly welcome had been very pleasing. When the meeting closed it was agreed that as many as possible would be on tlie wharf on the morning of Sunday Bth January when the majority of the teachers would arrive.
