OBITUARY

MR ALFRED PEART The death has occurred at his residence “Alston,” Okete, Raglan, of Mr Alfred Peart, formely of Nelson. The late Mr Peart was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1863. When a child he was taken to Sweden with his parents and brothers, where they lived for the next seven years. He received his-edu-cation at a Swedish college in Carlstadt. and later upon the arrival of the family at Nelson in 1880 he attended the Nelson Bovs’ College. He decided to enter the 'teaching profession and took a position under the Nelson Education Board, firstly at Fern Flat, later being appointed headmaster at the F'oxhill and Spring Grove schools respectively. For health reasons he decided to resign from the service and take up farming pursuits. He purchased a sheep run at TaupMm near Farewell Spit, where he remained for some years. Later he took up a daily farm at Kaituna, also in the Col lingwood district. While at Kaituna he was elected a member of the Collingwood County Council. Some t wenty-eight years ago Mr Peart removed to the North Island, where for six years he was in business as a storekeeper at Pohangina, near Palmerston North. In 1910 he purchased a piece of virgin country at Okete, near Raglan. By sound methods combined with the co-operation of' his family, this place has been transformed from a scrub covered wilderness to one of the most productive and picturesque properties in the district. The late Mr Peart took a keen interest in the affairs of the Raglan Cooperative Dairy Company Ltd., being chairman of directors for twelve years from which position he retired two years ago though retaining a seat on the directorate. He was of a kindly and charitable disposition, and every worthy cause either for the betterment of the l district or the advancement of the religious life of the community had his support. His death is deeply regretted throughout the Raglan county and his funeral was large. lv attended by friends and settlers of the district.' A widow, three daughters, and four sons are left to mourn their loss.
