BURDEN OF TAXES IN AUSTRALIA
NO RELIEF THIS YEAR CANBERRA, 22nd June. Although the Budget proposals of the Commonwealth for the financial year 1932-33 have not been completed, and the Budget will not be brought down until August, a preliminary survey of the financial position has revealed the improbability of any reduction in taxation. When questioned to-day about the possibility of a reduction of Federal land tax, the Prime Minister (Mr Lyons) stated tlml a reduction was improbable, not only with respect to land tax, but to all taxes.
! The Commonwealth is pledged to the ] Premiers’ plan, and if, is claimed that it I must budget for the receipt of at least I as much revenue from income and land i taxation as it is now receiving. Revenue from Customs taxation has barely ; reached the required level, and there is i no present hope of relief from this quarter. Much will depend upon the discussions of war debts and reparations which are proceeding at the Lausanne Conference, but, even allowing for the most hopeful result, the Commonwealth, it is said, is unlikely to relieve the tax, | payers’ burdens.
