BERRY-BEARING SHRUBS

Berry-bearing shrubs render the mixed border and grounds exceedingly attractive at this season of the year, and as there is a scarcity of flowers for cutting they are welcome substitutes for various indoor decorations. Mixed with autumn foliage the effect is most attractive and lasting. Although one is unable locally' to grow the Pyrus aueaparia (the mountain ash or Rowan tree) to perfection, there are quite a number of kinds that max' be grown and that hear berries successfully'. Tlie following varieties can lie recommended: — Viburnum siebodlii, an evergreen shrub with large bright shining green laurel-like leaves, produces heads of white flowers in flat corymbs, followed by bright scarlet berries during the autumn and early winter. " Euoiiymus europaeus, a most distinct and beautiful hardy deciduous shrub in summer, is clothed in dark green foliage, and throughout the autumn is laden with a profusion of pendent bunches of scarlet and yellow berries, giving it a most unique appearance. Crataegus, in several showy varieties, notably crenulata, produce their brilliant-coloured fruits in profusion. Pyrus mains, the dilfcrcnt varieties of crab apples, notably Gorgeous, previously described, arc exceedingly ornamental when laden at this season with a profusion of showy small fruits.
