RUSSIAN PETROL
SPECIAL BRITISH DUTY URGED LONDON, 9th June. “The whole nation would rejoice if the Government put a special duty on Soviet petrol and oil,” says the “Daily Mail” in a leading article. “The collapse of the international oil conference in New York was due to an attempt by Soviet and other foreign interests to crush the Anglo-Dutch companies. The Soviet is in a strong position, because its oilfields have been developed and equipped with British money, which was confiscated in the revolution, costing Russia nothing. She thus can sell oil at a slaughter price, endangering the Anglo-Persian Company, in which £7,500,000 of British money is involved.”
