CIVIC AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL CORRESPONDENCE AND REPORTS The fortnightly meeting of tho Nelson City Council was held last evening at the Municipal Chambers. There were present: The Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt), Councillors F. W. Huggins, ft. L. Page, It. Watson, IT. 15. A. Washbourn, J. Stringer, S. IT. Moynagh, S. A. Gibbs, and W. Black. Councillor E. P». Neale was excused from attendance. PAYMENTS The following payments were authorised:—

CORRESPONDENCE Permission was given to the Girls’ College to hold swimming sports at the baths on 11th inst. The Prime Minister wrote stating that he had noted the Council’s views regarding the matter of exchange, which would receive careful consideration. The secretary- of the Volunteer Fire Brigade stated “that the seat donated by the United Fire Brigades’ Association as a memento of the annual conference held at Nelson last year, was now available, and a request was made that it be placed outside the public hospital grounds. It was resolved to thank the Association for .its gift and to place it where requested. Mr E. B. Jackson wrote acknowledging letter of sympathy. The request of Mr M. L. Anderson for-repairs to footpath in Bronti street was - referred to Committee. A complaint was received from Mr R. A. ’ Stedman, King street, as to storm water entering his property. The. letter was referred to Committee to visit. A letter from the Public Works. Department as to removal of fire appliances from the Government building grounds was referred to the Council’s representatives on the Brigade to report back to the Council. A request from a company for permission to erect weighing machines in the Queen’s Gardens and in Bridge street was not entertained. The Unemployment Commissioner forwarded a circular letter expressing thanks for the support accorded the vegetable growing scheme. Councillor Page said the local committee had the matter in hand, and asked if the Council could assist by allowing one of its gardeners to assist in supervision.Councillor Moynagh, while expressing sympathy with Councillor Page’s suggestion, thought the efficiency of the public gardens would suffer. As a matter of fact he thought the Council should employ a youth to assist in the gardens. Councillor Huggins thoroughly agreed with Councillor Moynagh’s suggestion to employ a youth in the gardens. N.ot enough attention was paid to the public reserves. The letter was referred to Committee. Permission to take moving pictures" in

the city streets was granted to Mr W. Wilkinson. The usual rebate of rates was granted the Nelson Lawn Tennis Club. A slip on Quean’s Drive was drawn attention to by Mr P. C. Manson. The Engineer was instructed to report, the Committee to visit. Permission to remove railing and trees in Toi Toi street (near the Zigj-Zag track) was granted subject to the supervision of the Engineer. The Mayor and the City Engineer were appointed to report as to a complaint made by Mrs A. E. Kingdom Manuka street, as to damage caused by tar. The Nelson Unemployment Committee asked that extra work be given to the men employed on relief work inorder to allow them to pay their unemployment levy. The Mayor said if the request was granted it should also apply to those who had perhaps struggled and had paid the levy. The Engineer said an extra half-day would cost £SO. Councillor Washbourn pointed out that probably the same request would come up each quarter. Councillor Moynagh, while expressing sympathy with the unemployed, said (lie matter should not be a municipal but a national one. After some further discussion it was unanimously resolved without in any. way binding the Council or establishing v any precedent to be followed in the future, that an extra half-day’s work be given to all unemployed. The Unemployment Committee also forwarded suggestions made by the Rotary Club with a view of finding work for the unemployed. It was resolved to inform the Committee that the suggestion regarding the Rocks road should be sent to the Tahunanui Town Board. The other suggestions were referred to Committee. The use of the municipal baths was granted the Swimming Club on the evening of 9th inst. A request from the Y.M.C.A. for permission to erect temporary barricades at the junction of Harley and St. John streets during the coming carnival was referred to Committee with power to act. Permission was also given to use Victory Square on 12th inst., with the right to charge for admission.
