MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND OTHER BUSINESS Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., dealt with a number of police and other cases at a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court to-day. On the information of J. T. Brough, traffic inspector, Waimea County Council, Owen J. Pahi, who pleaded guilty to driving a motor cycle on 15th February on the Stewart Estate in a dangerous manner, was fined £2, costs 12s. Counsel for the inspector explained that defendant rounded a corner on his wrong side of the road and had a head-on collision with another cyclist.' R. Whitwell was fined 10s, costs 10s, for riding a bicycle at night without' a light. The information was laid by the Police. MAINTENANCE ORDERS An application was made by March Giles to vary a maintenance orefer in respect to his wife. An order was made remitting the arrears, and cancelling the order, 7s 6d a week to be paid for the maintenance of the child. The maintenance officer (M. Cussen) proceeded against Henry P. Tasker for disobedience of maintenance orders in respect of his wife and child. It was stated that defendant was £62 in arreais regarding his wife’s order and £3l in respect to the child. On the first charge defendant was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, warrant to be suspended so long as 10s a week is paid ; and on the second charge a similar sentence was imposed, warrant to be suspended so long as £1 2s 6d a week is paid. On the application of Norman Weir arrears were remitted and the order suspended. SEPARATION ORDER Karlina May Loveridge applied for a separation and maintenance order against her husband, Francis John Loveridge, and guardianship of the children. After evidence had been heard, the Magistrate granted the separation order and guardianship, with 5s a week maintenance with respect to each of five children. FALSE PRETENCES Hugh Pirie Greig pleaded guilty to obtaining by false pretences the sums of £35, £ls, and £33 6s 8d on various dates from Peter Francis McHardy. The accused elected to be dealt with summarily and was admitted to two years’ probation on each charge, with a special condition that restitution of the money be made within six months. A MONTH FOR ASSAULT Sidney Rowe, who pleaded guilty to assaulting Francis Mary Rowe, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. On a second charge of being found drunk the accused was convicted and, discharged.
