MONTHLY MEETING M E 1)1 CAL SUPERINTEND AN T* S REPORT STRENGTHENING OF NURSES' HOME Tiic monthly meeting or the Nelson Hospital Board held yesterday afternoon was attended by Mr F. W. 0. Smith (chairman), Mosdaincs Moffatt and Watson, Messrs T. Hewetson, G. Maemuhon, CL Page, 11. Tunnicliffc. 11. F. Spiers, and Major Dagger. Accounts amounting to £'3652 17s wero passed for payment. Tho Town Committee considered that owing to the present shortage of finance it was impossible to instal an automatic stoker at tlie institution. # The Medical Superintendent (Dr. F. Hudson) reported that 106 patients had been admitted during July and 91 discharged, leaving 87 in the institution. Operations numbered 7.1, 65 minor and 6 major; maternity confinements, 13; X-ray attendances, 70; outpatients attendances, 253; pathological investigations, 40; massage treatments, 147. Arising out of the report it was decided that 8 visiting permits he issued to the Friendly Societies for a lodge representative to visit patients from his lodge. Tlie position of radiologist at the hospital was referred to tho Town Committee for a report. The, Matron of the Motueka Cottage Hospital reported that 3 patients wero admitted during July and 4 discharged, leaving one iri hospital. The report of the Master of the Alexandra Home (Mr A. Hunter) was re. ceived. There are at present 24 inmates in the institution. Tho Relieving Officer (Mr H. Kidson) reported on his work during the month. A number of families had been assisted. A large number of travelling unemployed are each month coing through tho district. CORRESPONDENCE The Nelson United Friendly Societies intimated that a referendum was being taken among members of lodges for members of same wishing to lake part in the scheme proposed by tho Board. The Nelson Radio Club notified that a tender bad been accepted for tho installation of a radio for tho Nurses’ Home.

The Hospital Board’s Association intimated that the annual subscription to the Association had been reduced 50 per cent. It was resolved to pay the subscription of £7; A petition was received from Col lingwood residents for a continuance of tho payment of subsidy to the travelling nurse in that district. Tim district guaranteed £25 and wished the Board Lo subsidise that amount £ for £.

It was decided to request the Department of Health lo subsidise the public, donation and tho matter will ho further considered at the next meeting. Owing to the difficulty of preparing the business for meetings for the first Wednesday in each month it was decided that in tho ’future the monthly meeting he held on the second Wednesday in the month, to take effect in October. It. was pointod out that: at one time there were a number of members who sat both on the Board and on the Waimca County Council which had its

mooting the following day, so making it convenient for them. At the present time, of the 44 Boards in New Zealand ; Nelson was tho only one which sat so early in the month. Mr Tunnicliffc, who is at present tho only one who is on both local bodies agreed to the proposal and moved that it be given effect to. Tho plans and specifications wero submitted for the repairing of earthquake damage and the strengthening of tho Nurses’ Home, also for the new morgue. The plans were approved. The chairman said the method of strengthening the nurses’ lniildip" would he similar to that adopted for the main hospital.
