GRANT FOR BRIDGES

MARLBOROUGH REPLACEMENTS Regarding the work' of replacing land’s and Dalton’s bridges, also 'two bridges over the Tunakina river _ and Cooper’s bridge over the Rai river, about which the Hon. Harry Atmoro, Minister of Education, and Mr El F. Healy, M.P. for Wairau, made personal representations to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, last evening informed the members for Nelson and Wairau respectively that he was prepared to make the necessary grant for the replacement of these bridges provided the Marlborough County Council is prepared to regard such assistance as a charge on its allocation of Government moneys available to it for this financial year. This course is to be taken owing' to the flood damage vote having been exhausted. The Minister of Public Works recognises the urgency of the matter and is prepared to authorise the items for expenditure in anticipation of the roads estimates being approved by Parliament. The usual stipulations of the Public Works Department regarding approval of plans and specifications by the District Engineer will of course have to be complied with.

The Hon. Air Atmore and Mr Ilealy are making further representations to the Alinister of Public Works regarding the repair of the Alahakipawa bridge.
