"Rivals” in its primary sense arc those who dwell on the hanks of tho same “river.” As all experience shows, there is no such fruitful source of contention as a water-right, and it would continually happou (hat these occupants of the banks would bn at strife with one another. Thus "Rivals” came to bo used of persons who were, on any ground, in competition more or lcss :
