RIFLE SHOOTING

NELSON CLUB V! COUNTRY The annual shoot between the Nelson Defence Rille Club and a team drawn from the Nelson Rifle Association from the country clubs took place at BrightWater. Neither side fielded its strongest team owing to various counter attractions ;’ ljut the function was a decided success inasmuch as it provided a representative gathering for the annual riieetitig of the association, winch was field in the evening in .Mr R. Freeman’s room at Brightwater. , : The match commenced at 300 yards with 7 counting shots and 2 sighters, in bright sunlight with a cold penetrating southerly wind which made sighting somewhat difficult owing to the cold wind whipping the eyes of tho competitors. The oountr" men took’the lead by the time the first range was halfway through and held it to the end, increasing their margin as the match wore on, and won with the decisive margin of 28 points. The country team was drawn from Owen River, Korere, Tadmor, Motueka and Waimea clubs, and as the majority are young members they are to be congratulated on the great improvement displayed in the choppy wind; and in heating the more experienced shots of the Nelson 01 üb. This is just what the association had in view when these matches were inaugurated and should give the country clubs a deal of encouragement. The concluding range was 10 shots at 500 yards and copsidering the conditions the country men shot well, averaging, 43.3 per man here, Nelson averaging 41.9. The return match is to he fired at Tapawera on Labour day. The scores are as under:— COMBINED TEAM
