. ‘ COST OF EDUCATION j ;. I ; A COMING INVESTIGATION . The Government will shortly announce the. personnel of the committee directed to investigate all phases of education expenditure, with a view to recommending economies. It is intended to be a non-political body and a prominent Canterbury educationist, Mr H. D. A eland j is mentioned as the probable chairman (writes the Wellington' correspondent of the “Christchurch Times”). This committee, was officially suggested some months ago, ,and the reason for delay in its appointment is that it can now proceed, with full knowledge of the finances for the current year, and a better understanding of the urgent need for curtailment of by far the largest item in the State annual expenditure, excepting interest. Including debt charges on educational buildings the present annual expenditure is four and a half millions. The main iteriis in the total are;— £ Elementary education ....... 1,942,736 Secondary 354,177 Higher education 5,297 Technical 209,468 Training teachers 151,250 Natice schools . 79,346 School . buildings, furniture and sites 137,040 Slightly- over . £200,000 is required for social, agencies, such as child -welfare, sihools for deaf, and feeble-minded, also physical instruction.
