The piano accompanist has of late years come into liis own. Once upon a time lie was regarded as a quite unimportant accessory to the singer or the violinist or the instrumental soloist. Nowadays accompaniment is well known to he a very musieianly art, and the good accompanist is recognised as an artist. Accompanists have often to disguise the lapses of their soloists, and frequently by quick, resource have saved awkward situations. Their most valuable function, however, is that of reinforcing the soloist’s work to the music’s best advantage, and that is what many admirable accompanists are doing to-day.
