FAMOUS PUNSTERS

Mr Joseph Knight, for long editor of delightful “Notes and Queries,” was a famous punster. Meeting Sir Rider Haggard just after the publication of “Jess,” lie at once adapted the lines in “Othello”: If I do prove him haggard, Though that his jesses were my dear heart-strings, I’d whistle him off.

With Sir Leslie Stephen and another famous climber, Mr James Payne, the novelist, attempted to scale an Alpine height. He was obliged to stop midway, and he rested in a comfortable hotel, while the others continued with their climb. Condoling with Mr Payne before leaving him, Sir Leslie quoted the Shakcsperean line:— The labour we delight in physics pain.
